Bertie Edwards was born in Brandon in 1892 (Thetford Q2-1892 4B:378), son of Charles Anthony and Mary Ann EDWARDS (née ZIPFEL).


] 1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Thetford Road, Brandon with his father Charles A EDWARDS [37] labourer in whiting yard; his mother Mary A [36]; brothers Charles [18] labourer in whiting yard and Wesley [1]; sisters Nellie [15], Edith [6] and Violet [4]. All were born in Brandon.

1911 census...Aged 20, he was at Malplaquet Barracks, Churchill House, Marlborough Lines, Aldershot in the 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. His widower father was at Thetford Road, with his sisters Edith and Violet, brothers Wesley and Jack [9] born Brandon. His mother had died in 1906.

His brother Charles was killed in Belgium in 1915. see here




Enlisted in Brandon.
He was captured by the Turks at the fall of Kut al Amara. About 70% of those captured died as a result of the long cross desert march they were forced to take. Disease, malnutrition and cruelty all took their toll
